MICHELLE MOUTON: THE WOMAN OF SPEED

(Reading Time 5 min)

Born on June 23, 1951 in Grasse, on the French Riviera, Michelle Mouton was destined to forge a different path. From a young age, she showed a burning passion for motors, a desire that would soon overpower any other interest. After briefly pursuing studies in law at university, the allure of racing became irresistible. At just 21, she discovered a passion for rallying, assisting a friend in preparing for the Tour de Corse. But Michelle wasn’t destined to remain in the co-driver’s seat for long. Her desire to drive was too strong to ignore.

Supported by her devoted father and the financial security of her family, she embarked on a career in motorsport. Her first challenge was to overcome the gender biases and barriers that dominated the racing world in the ’70s.

Her debut in the World Rally Championship in 1974 caused a stir. Despite the negative expectations of other participants, she showcased her talent on the tracks, achieving surprising results and attracting the attention of major automakers.

The highlight of her career came in 1981 when she became an official driver for Audi. Despite obstacles and personal tragedies, she fought for the world title until the last race, demonstrating extraordinary determination and courage.

Although she didn’t win the world championship, her impact on the world of racing was immense. She broke through the gender barrier, paving the way for future generations of female drivers. Her contribution to motorsport goes beyond victories and podiums; she dedicated her life to promoting women’s participation in the racing world, founding the Race of Champions and the Fiat Women in Motorsport Commission.

Her story is a reminder that nothing is impossible when you have the courage to pursue your dreams, regardless of the challenges along the way.
